Lady Hornets tame Tigers

Jan. 30, 2007

Final Stats

Houston, Texas - It was a streak the likes of which Freda Freeman-Jackson had never seen: her team had lost five of six SWAC games, including four in a row.

Freshman forward Assunta Fulgham made sure that streak came to an end.

Fulgham powered her way to 20 points and five rebounds as Alabama State beat Texas Southern 64-54 in Houston Monday night.

After a slow start, the Lady Hornets bolted out to a ten point lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Texas Southern fought back to get within five at halftime.

ASU went on an 11-5 run out of the lockerroom to build a 40-29 margin. Texas Southern, seeking their first conference win of the season, refused to quit. The Tigers responded with a 12-2 run of their own and trailed by only one.

That's when Fulgham made the play of the game. She missed a shot and Texas Southern got the rebound and the chance to take the lead. But Fulgham made a steal and was fouled. She drained two key free throws and the Lady Hornets never looked back.

Fulgham scored her 20 points in only 23 minutes, while making 8 of 16 shots.

Shantae Robinson added 11 points and six assists.

Tina Brown had 13 points to lead Texas Southern (2-16, 0-9 SWAC).

Alabama State (6-14, 3-6 SWAC) returns home for a three-game homestand beginning Saturday afternoon versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
