After dropping their home conference opener to Jackson State, the Alabama State Lady Hornets desperately needed a win as they faced Grambling State. If there were ever such a thing as a "must-win" game two of the SWAC season, this was it.
And, despite finding themselves down by 10 points in the second half, the Lady Hornets rallied for an exciting 82-78 win.
The game was marred by 62 fouls. But in Freda Freeman-Jackson's style of all out play for 40 minutes, those fouls are a by-product of effort and a thing of beauty in her eyes.
L'Teisha Holloway bounced back from a tough outing against JSU with 22 points, including a 17-17 performance from the free throw line. She wasn't the only Lady Hornet to shake off a season-long shoots slump.
As a team, ASU shot 57% in the second half, including 43% from outside the three point line. For the game, the Lady Hornets hit 78% (36-46) of their free throws, all season highs.
For ASU, Assunta Fulgham had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Shantae Robinson added 13 points and 6 assists.
Freshman sharpshooter Daphne Williams totaled nine points on three 3-point shots, increasing her team leading total to 26 for the year.
Kourtney Sherman scored 22 to lead Grambling State (4-9, 0-2 SWAC). Sanora Cole had 16 points and 8 rebounds, and Destiny Thompson picked 13 off the bench.
The Lady Hornets (4-9, 1-1 SWAC) hit the road for a pair of SWAC games over the weekend. ASU faces Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
