Final Stats
Itta Bena, Miss.-
Freshman Assunta Fulgham and senior Danielle Sanders pounded Mississippi Valley State for 27 points and 12 rebounds and powered Alabama State to a 70-63 SWAC victory.
ASU fell behind by as many 11 points in the first half, as MSVU raced out to a 17-6 lead. But Freda Freeman-Jackson called a time out to settle her young team, who promptly responded with an 18-7 run to tie the game at 24 with 2:54 remaining in the first half.
From there, the dynamic duo of L'Teisha Holloway and Shantae Robinson outscored the Delta Devillettes 7-2 to push ASU to a 31-26 halftime advantage.
MVSU refused to quit and fought back to take a 43-40 lead. The teams battled back and forth until the score was tied at 47 with 8:45 to go. Erin Ethridge then hit a layup to give ASU a two point lead and the Lady Hornets would never trail again.
Down the stretch, ASU put the game away by hitting 9 out of 10 free throws. Ironically, the only miss was by Holloway, who entered the game with 31 straight free throws made. Even though she missed her first free throw of the game, she did make 8 out of her 11 attempts. The sophomore guard managed 14 points and 5 rebounds in the Lady Hornets' second SWAC win of the year.
Fulgham finished with 17 points. Sanders had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Point guard Shantae Robinson added 13 points and four assists.
ASU (5-10, 2-2 SWAC) travels to Huntsville Saturday to take on archrival Alabama A & M. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
