Final Stats

Montgomery, Ala. - With Grambling State bringing a 7-0 SWAC record to won, Alabama State hoped to spoil the Tigers quest for a perfect conference season.

Instead GSU capitalized on two early Hornets' turnover to take a 21-7 win.

`They're a very good team and they did the kind of things good things do, like taking advantage of turnovers," said ASU head football coach Reggie Barlow "Again, our defense did their best - they had us off-balance in the first half but we made some adjustments and really slowed them down.

"But on offense, we missed some throws and dropped more passes, and you can't beat good teams when you do that."

In the first quarter, ASU star running back Jay Peck fumbled for only the second time in 185 carries. Seven plays later, Tiger back Frank Warren scored from 3 yards out to give GSU a 6-0 lead. ASU's Jimmy Toussaint blocked the PAT.

On the ensuing drive, Hornets' quarterback Chris Mitchell was intercepted by Jeffrey Jack. Brandon Landers found Tim Abney for a seven yard touchdown.

Landers hit Reginald Jackson for the 2-point conversation pushing the score to 14-0.

The Hornets finally got their offense going and drove from their own 22-yard line to the GSU 30. On 4th and 3, the Tigers held Rahmod Traylor just short of a first down

Grambling State took over and marched 72 yards, and Landers hit Warren for a two yard touchdown. After the two-point conversion, GSU led 21-0.

With the offense unable to score, the ASU defense took matters into their own hands. On a blitz, Landers was hit while throwing and Hornets lineman Christopher Preer intercepting his pass giving ASU great position.

Craig Freeman's 9-yard touchdown run cut the lead to 21-7. Neither team would score again

Peck finished with 117 yards on 17 carries. The Hornets held Warren, who came into the game just a few yards behind Peck among the SWAC rushing leaders, to only 60 yards on 16 carries.

ASU linebacker Rechard Johnson continued his outstanding play, totaling 13 tackles.

The Hornets are on the road next week, as they travel to play Mississippi Valley State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
