Despite a career high 22 points and 21 rebounds from Brandon Gordon, Alabama State lost to Troy 85-74 Saturday night.
The Hornets started strong, building as big a lead of as much as seven points before settling for a 37-36 hafltime lead.
However, in the second half, fouls began to mount for ASU - who had been dominant inside and on the glass.
In the second half alone the Trojans attempted 21 free throws and made 9, compare to only 8 makes on 8 attempts fro the Hornets.
ASU outshot Troy's vaunted perimeter shooters from outside the 3-point line. The Hornets were 9-20 (45%) compared to Troy's 10-27 (37%).
Still, the Trojans hit big shots when it counted - including a 3-pointer by Brandon Hazzard with just over 11 minutes remaining as part of a 12-2 run that gave Troy a cushion they would hold to the end.
Andrew Hayles joined Gordon in double figures with 21 points, including a career-high 7 3-pointers.
The Hornets have a week to rebound before heading to play Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg on December 15 at 4 p.m.
