Feb. 12, 2007

Final Stats

Who are these guys?

Just five days after scoring only 44 points in their last outing, Alabama State almost reached that mark in the first half alone as they beat archrival Alabama A & M 74-70 on Saturday.

The Hornets held a 38-34 lead at halftime, even though they only shot 39%. They were able to drill 5 three point baskets, including two by reserve Tahrea Jackson. Fortunately, ASU's survived its free throw shooting woes (10-19) because Alabama A & M struggled themselves (5-16).

Typical of this hard fought rivalry neither team had more than a six point lead in the second half. The Bulldogs fought back from their halftime deficit to take a 54-51 lead.

ASU's Andrew Hayles tied the game with a deep three pointer with 10:41 remaining in the game. The Hornets would never trail again, led by the solid decision making of senior point guard Dustin Richmond - who finished with 12 points and five assists.

Down the stretch, ASU hit 7 of 10 free throws - including one by Miguel Morton with four seconds remaining to clinch the ASU win.

Richard Lott lead the Hornets with 13 points. Jackson tied Richmond with 12.

For A & M (7-16, 2-10 SWAC), Trant Simpson had 18 points and 10 assists. Cornelius Hester had 13 and LaNorris Smith scored 10.

Alabama State will play at Southern Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
