Final Stats
Baton Rouge, La. -
Just a couple of weeks ago, most thought Alabama State wouldn't be a factor in the SWAC race. At 2-6, they were of danger of not even qualifying for the conference tournament. But after a 45-37 win over Southern, the Lady Hornets are sporting a five game winning streak and the confidence of a contender.
Shantae Robinson opened the scoring with a short jumper. ASU would lead by as much as much as 13 in the first half. The Lady Hornets forced the Lady Jaguars into 26% shooting and 17 turnovers. Most importantly, ASU only allowed 13 point in the first 20 minutes, the lowest for a Lady Hornet opponent all season.
Unfortunately, ASU's shooting wasn't too much better -39%-- and they only scored 22 points themselves.
Still, their lead stood at 22-13 at the half.
The second half was more of the same as the shooting woes continued. In fact, after Ashely Blakes two free throws brought Southern with eight with 10:33 remaining, neither team scored a single point until L'Tiesha Holloway's two charity shots with 4:43 to go.
ASU would push the lead to 15, but an 11-1 Jaguar run shrunk it to only five with 34 seconds on the clock. But Robinson drained two free throws on the next possession to put the game away.
Robinson, playing some of her most sound basketball of the season, scored 9 points and grabbed seven rebounds - both team highs. Assunta Fulgham also had 9 points for the Lady Hornets.
Krystal Huggins was the only Lady Jaguar (3-19, 3-11 SWAC) in double figures with 13 points. She also led them with 9 boards.
ASU will try to push their winning streak to six when they visit Alcorn State on Monday. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
