Despite 17 points from Essence Butler, Alabama State fell to Prairie View 87-61 Saturday night.
The Lady Hornets and the Lady Panthers battled back and forth throughout the first half. After falling behind by five, ASU went on a 9 to one run to take a 23-20 lead with 5:19 to go in the first half. That's when Prairie View asserted themselves defensively and closed the first half by outscoring the Lady Hornets 16 to four. The Prairie View lead was 36--27 at halftime.
ASU came out of the locker room on fire as Butler's 3-pointer and Jasmine Sanford's jump shot pulled the Lady Hornets within four. From there, it was all Prairie View as the Lady Panthers.
Their lead swelled to as much as 36, 87-51 with 3:32 remaining in the game. Even though the game was out of reach, the Lady Hornets kept playing hard and scored the last 10 points of the game. Still, Prairie View took their second win over ASU, 87-61.
The Lady Panthers (13-13, 11-4 SWAC) were led by Candice Thomas's 22 points. Gaatie Werema added 21 and Shavonne Smith had 10.
For ASU (10-16, 7-8 SWAC), Sanford was the second leading scorer with nine points while grabbing 12 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets play their last home game of the year Monday night at 6 p.m. when they host Texas Southern.
