Final Stats
After winning five straight, the Alabama State Lady Hornets had lost back-to-back games entering Monday night's match up with Texas Southern. Behind a strong second half, ASU picked up an important 55-38 win at home.
"This was a big game for us," Freeman-Jackson said. "We desperately needed to try to build some momentum heading into the SWAC tournament."
Although TSU had only won one conference game entering the contest, they certainly didn't play like it. They hung with the Lady Hornets in a tight first half. Both teams played tight defense, causing an ugly first 20 minutes of offense. They combined for 16 turnovers and 35% shooting.
The Lady Hornets shot the basketball much better to begin the second half, but TSU stayed close. The ASU lead was only 39-38 with 6:05 to go. From there, it was all ASU.
The Lady Hornets pounded the ball inside, and Danielle Sanders and Shanice Merritt scored combined for six straight points to push the lead to seven.
Jasmine Hazley and Jasmine Sanford hit back to back lay ups, Sanders put in another basket and Shantae Robinson hit a free throw and a 3-pointer to cap an amazing 16-0 run that closed the game.
Assunta Fulgham led ASU with 14 points. Robinson added 11 rebounds and 9 assists.
Nesharia Massey scored 9 points to pace the Lady Tigers (3-22, 1-15 SWAC).
The Lady Hornets (11-16, 8-8 SWAC) head out on the road to close the regular season. ASU will play Jackson State Thursday night at 5:30pm, before traveling to Grambling State for a 6 p.m. contest.
