Lady Hornets Win Home Opener in Style

March 16, 2007

Final Stats

Alabama State won its home opener Friday afternoon 1-0 over Southern University behind a dominant pitching effort from Whitney Valentine.

The Lady Hornets scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning when April O'Neal singled to lead off the inning. O'Neal promptly stole second and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Amber Smith drove her in with an infield single.

Valentine made that lead stand up as she struck out 10 Lady Jaguars while allowing only three hits.

Megan Hodge took the loss for Southern despite only allowing the one run and four hits in six innings of work.

"It was a really good win for us," said Telma O'Neal-Hall. "It's always great to get that first win in front of the home fans, especially against SWAC competition."

The Lady Hornets move to 6-14 overall, and 3-0 in the SWAC.

ASU and Southern meet in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lagoon Park. First pitch is 2 p.m. and admission is free.
