Hornets Get Series Win Against Southern

By winning the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Southern, Alabama State won their first conference series of the 2007 season.

ASU won game one 5-2 before falling 8-0 in the nightcap.

ASU 5, Southern 2

Alabama State beat Southern 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

Whitney Valentine opened the scoring with a home run in the second inning.

The Lady Hornets tacked on two more runs in the third inning.

Nicole Zarate lead off the inning with a double. Zarate moved to third based on Karissa Whaley's infield single. Zarate scored on a wild pitch and Whaley advanced to second.

April O'Neal grounded out to second, moving Whaley to third. Whaley scored on Destinee Sanchez's hit to left field.

Southern responded with a run in the top of the fourth. ASU scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, on home runs by Destinee Sanchez and Pam Curry, respectively.

After allowing one more run in the seventh inning, Sanchez (5-5) shut the door by forcing two Southern groundouts.

For ASU, Zarate went 3-4 with a run scored and Valentine was 2-3 with two RBI.

Southern 8, ASU 0

Game two of the doubleheader was all Southern.

Each team's starting pitcher (Whitney Valentine for ASU and Jennifer Hodrick for Southern) cruised through the first three innings. Southern exploded for six runs in the fourth.

The big blow was Aruba Nicholas' two-run home run.

Southern tacked on two more runs in the seventh. For the game, Hodrick limited ASU to only four hits.
