Hornets Take Win Over Jackson State

March 18, 2007

Final Stats

After splitting a doubleheader with Saturday, Alabama State's players were down. They took the first game in strong fashion and was only two outs from a sweep. However, Jackson State rallied for an important win. Sunday gave ASU's young team a chance to show if Saturday night's loss was a setback or motivation.

Behind freshman Zeb Hilburn, the Hornets showed great resilience as they held on for a huge 3-2 win.

ASU's James Jordan opened the scoring when he doubled home Alexandria Griggs in the second inning. Christopher Davis later singled home Jordan to put the Hornets ahead 2-0.

ASU tacked on another run in the fourth as Griggs raced home on Brione Lander's single.

Hilburn only allowed two Tiger hits through the first five innings. JSU broke through in the sixth as they manufactured a run when Anthony McLine singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a groundout.

JSU pulled within 3-2 as Laderick Johnson was the second Tiger to score after getting on via a walk.

Hilburn though refused to allow another win to slip through the Hornet's hands. He got JSU three up and three down in the seventh and eighth innings.

ASU headed into the ninth clinging to their one run lead. Hilburn got the first two Tigers before Ricky Qunitero singled. But ASU's focused freshman bore down and Laderick Camper to ground out ending the game and giving the Hornets a huge conference series win.

James, Jordan and Griggs each had two hits for the Hornets.

ASU is back in action on Thursday as they host Jacksonville State at Paterson Field. First pitch is 2 p.m. and admission if free.
