Powered the big bat of senior Johnathan Stevens, Alabama State won an important three game series against Alcorn State over the weekend. The Hornets won the first game 8-7 before falling 5-1. In the deciding game, Stevens' clutch grand slam keyed ASU's 13-8 victory.
Game 1
ASU 8, Alcorn 7
After being held in check for the first six innings, Alabama State's offense erupted for six runs in the seventh for an exciting 8-7 win.
Zeb Hilburn singled to lead off the inning. James Jordan reached on an error by the pitcher, which plated a run. Andre Jones drove in Jordan, and came home on Breon Landers' home run. Johnathan Stevens followed with a homer of his own to pull the Hornets to tie the score.
Alexandria Griggs later singled in Selmon Pearson for the winning margin.
Josh Froneberger got Alcorn three up and three down to take the win.
Game 2
Alcorn 5, ASU 1
Alcorn State scored three runs in the bottom of the first on the way to evening the series.
Reynaldo Cortez went seven strong innings for the Braves. Caleb Betschart had two hits, including an RBI triple and a double, and two runs scored.
Johnathan Steven scored the Hornets' sole run. After he doubled, Selmon Pearson singled him home.
Game 3
ASU 13, Alcorn 8
Alabama State jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the fourth. The Braves responded with four in the bottom of the fourth.
In the seventh, the Hornets had one of the biggest innings of the season. Andrew Jones and James Jordan walked. Christopher Davis laid down a great bunt, and the bases were loaded.
That's when Stevens changed the game and the series with one swing. His third homer of the season pushed the Hornets to a 7-4 lead.
Stevens wasn't done as he would smack a home run with Breon Landers aboard in the top of the ninth. Marshall Hawkins and Davis each had RBI singles to round out the scoring.
Zeb Hilburn threw a complete game to earn his second win of the season for ASU.
