Zeb Hilburn saved his best performance for the last game of the year as he tossed a sparkling 6-hit complete game win against Mississippi Valley State.
"He was great," said ASU baseball coach Larry Watkins. "He threw strikes and stayed ahead of guys. Zeb was outstanding today."
The Hornets got out to a fast lead in the second. Larry Watkins, Jr. singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second when Furquan Shamsud-Din was hit by a pitch, and advanced to third on a bunt single by Christopher Davis. Watkins, Jr. scored on a wild pitch by JSU starter Steve Reid.
ASU added on to their lead in the third.
Alexandria Griggs tripled home Will Johnson and Selmon Pearson. Watkins, Jr. singled in Griggs, staking Hilburn to a 4-0 lead.
Valley was able to get on the scoreboard when Greg Dees hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, but that would be all the scoring Hilburn would allow.
The Hornets helped him by playing their best defensive game of the season. The fact that the Hornets didn't make an error was only part of the story.
Breon Sanders made two diving catches in centerfield. Griggs made two great plays at third base. Larry Watkins, Jr., threw out a Delta Devil trying to stretch a single into a double. Johnathan Stevens - who later hit a solo home run - made several great plays at first, and Johnson simply made every play possible at shortstop.
Pearson led ASU with three hits. Johnson and Watkins, Jr. had two hits each. Griggs had two RBI.
