Final Stats

Montgomery, Ala. - As the preseason injuries mounted for Alabama State, head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson had one saving grace - senior point guard Shantae Robinson.

And, after Robinson led ASU to a 60-55 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Freeman-Jackson is finally seeing the dominant ball handler she has been expecting since Robinson arrived from Chicago four years ago.

"Shantae was excellent tonight," Freeman-Jackson said. "We have to get leadership from her. With the players we are missing and the young ladies we have out there, Shantae has to be the one to step up every night."

Monday night, in clutch moment after clutch moment, Robinson made play after play after play.

The Lady Hornets entered the second half trailing by three. Robinson rebounded a UAPB miss, raced down the court and found Kimberly Davis who canned a three-pointer.

After a Golden Lion three-pointer, Robinson hit a fall-away jumper to keep ASU within one. Four possessions later, Robinson hit another shot - and this one tied the game at 41.

Next time down, Robinson found Assunta Fulgham for an easy basket, putting the Lady Hornets ahead by two. Robinson would score ASU's next basket, with a jump shot from the top of the key to make it 45-41.

The Lady Hornets' then forced a tough shot by UAPB and Robinson would find Fulgham for two and ASU was up 47-41.

The Lady Hornets pushed the lead to as much as 9, before settling for the five point win.

"It was a good team win," Robinson said. "Everybody stepped up and played together. We can keep getting better if we keep working hard."

Robinson finished with 13 points, 9 assists and six rebounds. Erica Lumpkin bounced back from a tough game Saturday with 13 points and 9 boards. Fulgham added 11 points, and Tanika Jackson had 10.

The Lady Hornets (5-9, 2-2 SWAC) host archrival Alabama A & M Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
