ASU Runs Away from UAPB in 69-40 Win

Montgomery, Ala. - When Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson looked down his roster before the season, he had high hopes for his squad.

But despite the talent and versatility he envisioned, he knew it would take time for all of the new players to mesh with the returnees. How long, he wasn't sure. But after a 69-40 dismantling of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night, the answer may be sooner, rather than later.

"This is the kind of performance we've been working toward," said Jackson. "Pine Bluff is a very good team, but the shots didn't fall for them. We did play well, though, and I'm proud of the way our guys performed."

The night was ASU's from the start as the Hornets bolted out to a 16-4 lead, behind an incredibly balanced effort that would be the story of the night.

Brandon Brooks scored the first five points, followed by a three-pointer by Joel Bosh. Andrew Hayles hit a jump shot. Then Brandon Gordon hit a smooth jumper. By the time, Brooks scored again, the Hornets had built their 12 point advantage.

Still, the "balanced" theme was far from over, as the next three shots were hit by Roland Fitch, Rashad Provitt and Jamarr Sanders.

"It seemed like this was the night that everyone found a way to contribute," said Jamarr Sanders, who finished with a game-high 15 points. "We have a lot of guys who can score, and when everyone is hitting, we're a tough team.

By the time the first half ended, eight Hornets had scored, and more importantly, Alabama State held a 34-17 advantage.

Perhaps sensing they'd let the foot off the gas too many times already this season, the Hornets came out of the locker room on fire. Before the Golden Lions knew what hit them, ASU held a 46-19 lead and the rout was on.

For the game, ASU shot a blistering 66% and crushed UAPB on the boards 37-18.

Despite the final score, Jackson still found room for improvement.

"We can still get much better in terms of our offensive execution," Jackson said. "I liked a lot of what we saw tonight. And I definitely feel we are headed in the right direction."

The Hornets (7-7, 3-1 SWAC) have four days off before the Alabama A & M Bulldogs roll into town for a huge clash Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
