Final Stats
Baton Rouge, LA -
The old cliché `when it rains, it pours' barely begins to describe the season for the Alabama State Lady Hornets.
After five season-ending injuries, ASU saw everything go wrong in their 52-35 loss at Southern.
Before they would score a single point, the Lady Hornets committed 12 turnovers and missed 13 shots. When LaShundreya Townsend hit a 3-pointer with 7:48 remaining in the first half, ASU trailed 25-3.
ASU's defense tightened and SU would only score two more points for the rest of the half. Still, the Lady Hornets were not able to capitalize as they only managed five additional points before heading to the locker room down 27-8.
Taking on their coach's persona, the Lady Hornets refused to go down without a fight. After Southern pushed their lead to 23, ASU went on a 16-7 run to pull within 14.
However, the Lady Hornets' - with much of their depth and experience sitting on the bench in street clothes - simply didn't have enough to overtake the Lady Jaguars.
Freshman sensation Erica Lumpkin - the eighth highest scoring freshman in America - struggled for one of the few times this season. She scored only four points on 2-19 shooting from the field, including 0-13 from the 3-point line - only the second time she hasn't made a 3-pointer in her young career.
Townsend continued her solid play with 11 points and five rebounds. Assunta Fulgham tallied eight points and 11 rebounds.
ASU (6-12, 2-5 SWAC) returns home for a match-up with Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
