Final Stats
Grambling, La. -
Coming off what he termed as their "worst performance of the year", Alabama State head basketball coach Lewis Jackson had a lot of questions about his squad.
After their 81-55 dismantling of Grambling State, many of those questions have been answered.
The Hornets led from start to finish as they dominated every facet of their SWAC opener.
"We played with great effort tonight," Jackson said. "That has been missing sometimes this year, but we had great effort of both ends of the court."
Brandon Gordon bounced back from a tough outing against UAB with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Brandon Brooks had 11 points, five assists and four rebounds in a strong all-around performance.
Andrew Hayles scored 14 points - including a dagger of a three-point shot that ended GSU's only real rally of the night pushing the score to 62-43 with 8:37 remaining.
The Hornets made 51% of their shots compared to only 36% for the G-men.
ASU also outrebounded GSU 42-31, and only allowed seven offensive rebounds - an area that has plagued the Hornets all season.
"We were much more solid around the basket," Jackson said. "Richard Lott (15 points, 6 rebounds) was especially good tonight."
The strong post play accounts for how the Hornets scored their second highest point total of season while taking a season low 10 3-point shots.
On Monday, ASU will travel to Mississippi to take on Jackson State in a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN U. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
