Montgomery, Ala. -
The Alabama State Lady Hornets could be forgiven if they'd been a bit nervous heading into their Monday night matchup with Prairie View A & M.
After all, the Panthers - coached by WNBA legend Cynthia Cooper-Dykes - were 8-0 in SWAC play and appearing primed to successfully defend their conference title.
However, the injury-depleted Lady Hornets went toe-to-toe and shot-for-shot with PVAUM, before tiring down the stretch in a 93-82 loss.
"Our team played so hard tonight," said ASU head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "I am so proud of them. Their character showed in this game; they came out and fought until the end."
Assunta Fulgham had perhaps her best game of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Point guard Shantae Robinson was also in top form, as she poured in 17 points to go with 13 assists. LaShundreya Townsend also added 17 points.
"We had our chances," Freeman-Jackson said. "Prairie View is too good for you to make mistakes against them. But we definitely showed that despite losing all we have lost, we can still compete."
ASU (7-13, 3-6 SWAC) will travel to face Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon at 5:30 p.m.
