DAYTONA BEACH, FL -
In a contest that could be classified as a "Game of Missed Opportunities", Alabama State lost its second straight - falling to Bethune Cookman Saturday at Municipal Stadium, 28-7.
The Hornets had numerous chances to end BCU drives, but the Wildcats averted danger on every opportunity - including two dropped interceptions. But, when junior Reid Herchenbach found redshirt sophomore Darius Mathis on a 30-yard strike with 46 seconds remaining in the second half - ASU trailed by a touchdown going into the half.
Then, the Bethune Cookman option attack began to wear the Hornets down - starting with an eight-play, 50-yard drive to begin the second half and that culminated in a touchdown. From there, the longest Hornet drive was seven plays, but it was followed by consecutive three-and-out and a two-play drive that ended in an interception.
In all, the Alabama State defense was on the field for 22 of the 30 second-half minutes. The Wildcats compiled 370 yards of total offense, 225 of which came on the ground.
Redshirt junior Rahmond Traylor led the Hornets' offense attack with 84 yards of total offense. He recorded 42 yards on 10 carries and 42 yards on six receptions. Mathis finished the game with 58 yards on five catches and one touchdown.
Herchenbach, in his first game as the sole quarterback, went 16-of-26 for 123 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
Defensively, junior Adrian Hardy recorded a team-high 13 tackles, 1.5 for loss and 0.5 sacks, while senior Clyde Holloway added 10 tackles, 2.5 for loss and one sack. Redshirt junior Rechard Johnson chipped in with eight tackles.
After a bye week, Alabama State will remain on the road as the Hornets travel to Birmingham, AL for a non-conference game with the Blazers of Alabama-Birmingham
