Lady Hornets Edged by Savannah State, 50-49

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Utilizing a strong defensive attack, Savannah State erased a 10-point deficit  on its way to earning a 50-49 win over Alabama State Monday evening at the ASU Acadome.

ASU (1-4) built an early lead before a 6-0 run by the Lady Tigers (6-2) allowed them to cut into the double-digit deficit. With 2:24 left in the first half, Alisha Nelson knotted the score at 24 with a layup.  The Lady Hornets answered with a three-pointer from Erica Henderson went into the locker room at halftime leading 27-26.

The second half featured a back-and-forth battle with the lead changing five times. Both teams fought on every possession and neither team was able to seize control of the game. The score was tied 45-45 with a minute remaining, before the Lady Tigers earned a slight lead following three free throws.

The Lady Hornets countered with a layup by Tanika Jackson with 11 seconds to play. LeEra Lewis fouled Courtney Long sending her to the free throw line where she connected on a pair of shots to seal the win for SSU.

Hill netted 10 points to lead Alabama State with Briana Thomas chipping in nine points before fouling out. Tandria Milton and Jackson both added eight points.

Savannah State got a game-best 14 points from Long. Alisha Nelson garnered a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.  Darice Fountaine and Crissa Jackson each scored eight points for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Hornets return to action against in-state rival University of Alabama Friday at 6 p.m. in the Acadome.
