Montgomery -- Alabama State University's Lady Hornets held on for a 48-43 win over the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Saturday night at the ASU Acadome.
The win has positioned the Lady Hornets (9-12, 6-4) for a chance to move into third place. UAPB fell to (7-14, 6-4).
"I feel good about this win tonight against UAPB," said Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "They are a good team, and without an Erica Lumpkin, who averages 18 points, we were able to stay focused and make good defensive plays."
L'Teisha Holloway lead the Lady Hornets with 16 points and five rebounds. Tanika Jackson had nine points and four rebounds, and Shanice Merritt added eight points and had a season high of 15 rebounds.
It was an exciting first half for fans, who witnessed three ties and 11 lead changes as the Lady Hornets managed to take a two-point lead at the break.
The tempo slowed in the second half as the Lady Hornets held the Golden Lions to under 50 points while extending their lead. ASU led by 13 points with just three minutes left in the game.
"Basketball has runs sometimes, but we were able to withstand the run," said Coach Jackson. "It's a good thing we had cushion to keep them from getting back into the game. We did not score a lot of points but we had success because of our defense."
The Golden Lions were lead by Shay Holmes with 12 points and 11 rebounds. LaQuisha Slaton had 11 points and eight rebounds and Arica Green added eight points and five rebounds.
The Lady Hornets will host Mississippi Valley State Monday night at the ASU Acadome. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
