Alabama State Crowned SWAC Regular Season Champions

Grambling, La. -- Brandon Brooks and Roland Fitch led the Hornets with 15 points to win in Grambling on Saturday, to a 65-58 win over Grambling State at the Assembly Center.

Wesley Jones paced the Hornets with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Andrew Hayles added 10 points.  The Hornets are now 19-9 overall and 16-2 in conference play.

With the win, the Hornets swept a back-to-back SWAC regular season title.

After leading by nine at halftime and twelve early in the second half, Alabama State found itself almost losing its lead letting Grambling get within three.

But Alabama State refused to lose.  A loss would lead to sharing the sought title that they seek.

Moments later, the Hornets found an offensive groove, gaining its eleven point lead with two back-to-back jumpers by Brandon Brooks with less than four minutes left in the contest.  The Hornets remained poised and came away with the victory.

Alabama State shot 50 percent (24-48). Meanwhile, the Tigers shot 41.2 percent (21-51).

Ariece Perkins led the Tigers with 14 points and five rebounds.  Donald Qualls added 12 points and four rebounds.

Alabama State will face Alabama A&M on Wednesday, March 11 at 8 p.m. in the Fair Park arena for  the SWAC championship tournament.
