Alcorn State Defeats Alabama State, 68-54, In Lady Hornets Hoops

LORMAN, Miss. -- Alcorn State had five players score in double digits helping them to a 68-54 win over Alabama State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Davey L. Whitney Complex Saturday afternoon.

Alcorn State improves to 3-11 overall and 3-3 in the SWAC, while Alabama State falls to 6-9 and 3-3. 

Both teams struggled on the offensive end, Alabama State went 18-of-47 from the floor, shooting 38.3 percent.  Alcorn shot 44.2 percent finishing 19-of-43.

Carolinsa Crumbly led Alcorn with 16 points and seven rebounds. Other Lady Braves in double figures included Isis Smith and Sharnika Breedlove with 12 points apiece, followed by Kiara Ruffin and Cheetra Johnson with 10 points each.

Alabama State was led by Tanika Jackson's 18 points and 10 rebounds. Erica Henderson chipped in eight points for the Lady Hornets.

In the first half, Alcorn jumped to an 18-10 lead with 9:11 left.  Alcorn State maintained the lead throughout the first half, holding a seven-point lead 25-18 with 4:23 remaining.

Tandria Milton then scored five straight points as Alabama State narrowed its deficit to 32-28 at intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Braves built a nine-point advantage over the Lady Hornets with 8:13 remaining on the clock.  Down the stretch, Alabama State was unable to get back into the game falling by double digits.

“They outplayed us in every phase of the game,” said Alabama State's head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  “We defended well and we only allowed them 43 shots, but unfortunately they made 19 of them.  They executed and we didn't.”

Alabama State closes out its current SWAC road swing at Southern University Monday evening at 5 p.m.
