Grambling State Squeezes by Lady Hornets 48-47

GRAMBLING, La. –
Despite Tanika Jackson's fourth double-double of the season, Grambling State rallied for a 48-47 victory over Alabama State Monday night in the Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball opener for both teams.

It marked the second consecutive down-to-the-wire loss for the Lady Hornets (3-7, 0-1 SWAC). Grambling State improved to 4-6 (1-0 SWAC) with the come from behind win.

“We just didn't finish,” said ASU head coach Freda Freeman Jackson. “There were a lot of missed assignments. We have not been able to close out our last few games.”

The Lady Hornets were down by as many as nine points in the first half after shooting below 30 percent from the field. ASU would rally and held a two-point lead at halftime.

Opening up the second half strong, the Lady Hornets built a double-digit lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the game. However, Grambling State's Rachele Dobbins and Jasher Blocker scored the last 10 points of the game to help the Lady Tigers escape with the win.

Jackson scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds, while teammate Nikel White added 12 points and nine boards.

Dobbins led GSU with 14 points followed by Blocker and Whitney Brown with seven points each.

The Lady Hornets travel to Jackson, Miss. to play Jackson State Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
