JACKSON, MS – Senior Tanika Jackson scored 16 of her career-best 35 points during the first half in leading the Alabama State women's basketball team to a 58-45 victory Wednesday at Lee E. Williams Assembly Center.
Jackson also pulled down 14 rebounds to record her second consecutive double-double performance.
The Lady Hornets improve to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the SWAC, while the Lady Tigers slip to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in league play.
ASU opened play with a 12-2 run against Jackson State. The Lady Hornets led by as many as 12 points in the opening period and held an 11-point advantage at the half, 29-18.
Jackson's second half barrage helped the Lady Hornets halt an 11-0 run by Jackson State. The JSU rally had trimmed ASU's lead to just two during the final 14:57 of the game.
For the game, Jackson shot 9-of-15 from the floor and 17-of-19 from the free throw line. She scored all 19 of her second half points during ASU's game-winning surge.
Jackson State was led by Rachel Jones' 15 points followed by teammate Phenicia Taylor with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets return to the ASU Acodome Saturday for their home conference opener against Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. Bama State fans are encouraged to wear gold to the game in support of “Good As Gold” night.
