FINAL STATS
MONTGOMERY -- Tanika Jackson's 25th career double-double helped the Alabama State University women's basketball team to a 55-37 victory over the University of Mobile on Tuesday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
With the win, ASU improves to 3-1 all-time against the Rams. Jackson, a Saginaw, Mich. Native, filled the stat sheet with a team leading 18 points, 17 rebounds and one steal.
The Lady Hornets (1-1) had its best shooting performance of the young season, shooting 32.4 percent in the first half from the floor, including 25.0 percent from long range. Freshman Quentori Alford from Atlanta, Ga. notched a career high of 13 points and seven boards.
Nikel White, Jasmine Quinn and Erica Henderson each notched six points apiece to assist in the Lady Hornets victory. White also had three rebounds, two blocks and two steals to add to her numbers. Henderson garnished her six points from the tip of the arch.
Red-shirt freshmen Angelese Hunter also had a big night adding eight rebounds and eight assist. ASU's defense held the Rams to just 25.5 percent shooting. Mobile (3-1), which entered the night with a perfect 3-0 record, committed 27 turnovers and were outrebounded 60-33.
The Lady Hornets routinely turned their defense into offense, scoring 15 points off turnover. After pulling away in the first half, ASU stretched its advantage to 20 points off of fast break baskets.
Down by as many as 10 in the first six minutes of the first half, ASU began to put its defensive ethics to work and knotted the game 14-14 all in the last ten minutes. Finally gaining momentum the Lady Hornets were able to go into the second half with a six point lead 27-21.
Jackson nearly had a double-double with 14 points and seven rebounds through just 20 minutes, which included her 4-4 from the free throw line.
In the last six minutes of the game ASU held the Rams to 37 points not allowing them to score another bucket while pushing to a final score of 55-37.
ASU will return to the floor on Friday, Nov. 19, against Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
