Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama State women's team entered into a battle with a red hot Southern Jaguars team that had won their last six out of eight contests, including three in a row. Unfortunately, ASU could not slow them down either falling 50-41.
The lady Hornets dropped to 4-13 with the loss. They are now 1-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference. Southern improved to 9-8 overall and improved to 6-1 in conference play.
“We have to be able to make shots”. Head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “There were times when we missed easy attempts right under the basket and it is hard to win if you cannot capitalize on those opportunities”.
ASU only shot 31% for the game. In addition, leading scorer Tanika Jackson was held six points below her average with 14 points and six rebounds on the night. Erica Henderson scored 10 points for the lady hornets including three from downtown.
The lady Jaguars were led by three that all scored eight points apiece. They were Carneta Henderson, Tiffany Henderson, and Jamie Floyd respectively. Southern's biggest advantage came off of points scored from ASU turnovers which were 14. “We committed 20 turnovers and that is way too many to beat an opponent as good as Southern”. Head coach Jackson said.
The ASU women will host Alcorn State Monday night from the Dunn-Oliver Acadome at 5:30 pm.
