FINAL STATS
HOUSTON, TX. - Texas Southern jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest. However, ASU managed to find themselves right back in the thick of it with a 13-6 run of their own cutting the deficit down to 19-13 in Houston. In the end, it was TSU that survived for a final of 73-59.
ASU entered the game in hopes of splitting a pair of games played during the road swing in Texas. The Hornets loss to Prairie View this past weekend. Both ASU and TSU were dead even from behind the three point arc going 6-13 in the first half. ASU only trailed by nine points at the break.
The first half shooting for ASU was a season high, making 44.4% of their attempts. To start the second half, The Hornets were outscored 16-6 led by Lawrence Johnson-Tanner who nailed back to back three's.
The loss dropped ASU to 6-16 overall and 3-6. The Tigers are now a league leading 8-1 in the SWAC. Overall they are now 10-10. “We knew they would come out aggressive and try to attack the basket”. Head coach Lewis Jackson mentioned. “TSU made some long baskets tonight that got them off to a good start”. Coach Jackson said.
Tramaine Butler scored 17 points to lead ASU on the night. Travele Jones led both teams in scoring with 18 points and six rebounds. Lawrence Johnson-Danner went 4-6 from three point range for TSU.
Next up, ASU will host a trio of games at The Dunn-Oliver Acadome starting this Saturday with Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
