Lady Hornets Edge Past Savannah State

Box Score Ezinne Kalu scored a game high of 25 points for Savannah State, but it wasn't enough to keep the Alabama State Lady Hornets basketball team from picking up a 47-45 win over the Tigers.

“I am glad about the win,” said Freda Freeman-Jackson, Head Women's Basketball Coach.  “I am not happy about how we got the win.  At half time we were up 34-16 and we let Savannah State score 29 points in the second half.  We are going to have to play to halves and not just one.  We did a great job at the free throw line tonight only missing seven instead of 10 or 12 free throws.  I was also glad to see that we out rebounded them as well.  All in all it was a good game for us, but we just have to be able to play both halves of the court and close the game out.”

Alabama State had two players in the double-digit figures, Danielle Gazaway, who led the team with 12 points and Erica Henderson which added a season-high 11 points, shooting 3-for-7 from the 3-point arch.

Alabama State led the first half with an 18 point margin over the Tigers, but Savannah State came out in the second half with hot hands shooting a cool 32.1 percent.  Sixteen of its 29 points were made from the free-stripe.

The last five minutes of the game was a nail biter for the Lady Hornets, Kalu and the Savannah State Tigers rallied late, scoring eight unanswered points to pull within one, 45-44.  ASU had three chances to pull away, but just did enough on the defensive side of the ball to allow the Tigers one more point which came from the free throw line.

Both teams did not score for the final three minutes of the game until Tamara Wadlington hit a layup that put the Lady Hornets ahead by two.  With an intense 48 seconds left on the clock the Lady Hornets did everything they could to hold the Tigers to the 47-45 loss.

The Lady Hornets dominated the boards, outrebounding Savannah State 43-27 behind Gazaway's seven rebounds.

Alabama State will take a short Christmas break and return to the hardwood floor on December 29 against the Kennesaw State Owls.  Tip-off time is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
