FINAL STATS
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State Women's basketball team continued their hot streak with a 62-52 win over Mississippi Valley State. The upset over the Devilettes gave The Lady Hornets back to back wins for the first time this season.
ASU (6-16, 3-8) never trailed in the game. They jumped out to a quick 17-7 lead with 11:34 left in the first half only to lead by seven at halftime. In addition, they were stingy on defense forcing a poor shooting performance for MVSU. They were 1-7 from three point range shooting only 14.3% in the first half.
“I told our girls that we need to do everything we can to win out at this point” Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson stated. “So far we are 2-0 with that thinking mentality and we need to continue to play with this type of energy”. Coach Jackson said.
Tanika Jackson led all scorers with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Jasmine Quinn scored 13 points on 6-9 shooting for ASU. MVSU (9-14, 6-5) was led by Courtney O-Bryant and Alia Frank, they both scored 14 points apiece.
The Lady Hornets biggest lead came with 5:32 left in the game with a 49-36 deficit they created for the Devilettes. As head coach Jackson notes Quinn and LeEra Lewis had a lot to do with that. “They both really stepped up for us and made huge plays down the stretch”.
The ASU women end their three game home stand hosting arch rival Alabama A&M this Saturday from The Dunn-Oliver Acadome. A tribute to 75 Years of Alabama State Basketball will be a part of the night's events along with the game serving as ASU's promotion game for breast cancer awareness. Tip-off is set for 3 pm.
