Erica Henderson tied a career high with 18 points to lead Alabama State to a 67-53 win over Prairie View A&M Saturday evening at the Oliver/Dunn Acadome.
Henderson set a career high with five three-pointers as Alabama State (7-10 overall, 4-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) ended a three-game losing streak. Alabama State led for most of the first half, behind the hot shooting of Jones, who finished with career high 14 points and eight rebounds.
“Our starting point guard (
Tamara Wadlington) was out with a torn ACL tear, so I knew we had to start a freshman point guard (
Ashley Jones),” ASU head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “I thought our girls did an excellent job playing defense without fouling. The team did not get into the bonus the first half and that hasn't happened in a long time, because we are constantly reaching and not playing smart, but I thought we did well on both ends of the floor.”
Quentori Alford had a double-double scoring 10 points and added 13 rebounds on the game.
Danielle Gazaway recorded 11 points in the win as well.
“Q, if she continues to progress and realizes her full potential, then the sky is the limit for her,” Freeman-Jackson said. “She did a great job and has been doing a good job all year defensively. I thought she stepped it up offensively.”
The Lady Panthers ( 7-12, 4-4) saw a three-game winning streak come to an end as Alabama
State beat PV at home for the first time since 2006.
ASU led 29-22 at the half, and never looked back. Henderson came out on fire after halftime, scoring 12 of her 18 points after intermission. The Lady Hornets led by as much as 19 in the second half, dominated the offensive boards 15-3 and outrebound the Lady Panthers 44-20 in the game.
“One of the other things I'm very happy about is that our “BIGS” got involved today,” said Freeman-Jackson. “They really stepped up, scored around the basket, and played great defense as well. Ashley is gradually coming into her own and she's another freshman we will have to rely on and blend in with our upper-classman to get the job done.”
Alabama State returns to the hardwood Monday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. when they face Texas Southern here at the Dunn/Oliver Acadome.
