Poor Shooting and Turnovers Hinders ASU in 62-48 Loss to Grambling

Box Score Missed baskets and turnovers led to the Alabama State University Women's basketball team folding 62-48 to the Grambling State Tigers Tuesday evening at the Assembly Center in Grambling, La.

“We didn't play defense tonight,” said Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. “We missed too many missed assignments at the wrong time and teams are getting too many runs on us.  If we correct our defense then we will be a better team offensively. We are just making too many mistakes defensively.  We were outrebound because they out played us all night, Grambling out hustled us and we have to do a better job of defending the ball.  We are going to need to get better and get better fast.”

Alabama State (3-7, 0-1 SWAC) trailed by 16 at the half struggling offensively and defensively shooting only 29 percent from the floor in the first half.

Grambling State (5-6, 1-0 SWAC) out rebounded ASU 54-31 having had trouble keeping Grambling's Wymeka Randle off of the boards, she scored five points and had seven rebounds.

Tamara Wadlington and Ashley Jones were the only two Lady Hornets in double figures, Jones scoring 12 points followed by Wadlington with 11 points and grabbing six rebounds.  Danielle Gazaway scored eight points and Erica Henderson added six points off of the bench.

The first half was ugly for the Lady Hornets missing shot after shot from the field.  Only an Erica Henderson lay-up at the 14:32 mark interrupted the shooting futility.

Alabama State allowed Grambling to shot 42 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes before going into the half up 34-18.

The second half saw ASU on its way to being blownout before a Jasmine Quinn jumper brought the Lady Hornets within nine points.   The Tigers then took another run with back-to-back three pointers that saw the Lady Hornets down by 17 before ending the game 62-48.

ASU will continue its SWAC run as they face the Tigers of Jackson State on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
