The Alabama State women's basketball team focused on defense in preparation for Savannah State, Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. CT at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga.
After dropping a 65-55 loss to Mercer the Lady Hornets took time out to focus more on defense during practice. They concentrated on half court defense as well as full court press.
“I felt like we needed to focus a lot on defense,” said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. “We have lost our last games due to defense. Like I said before I know that we can score, but we have to get back down the court and step up and play defense. We are not aggressive enough and we need to be able to make some good stops when teams try to run on us. My focus right now is to get us going in the right direction so when we get into conference play we will be well prepared for our conference foes.”
“The ladies worked hard to get ready for Savannah State. Savannah State has been playing well and we need to make sure that we come into the game playing just as well or even better.”
Alabama State continues to be led by Nakiya Smith averaging 13 points per contest. Although Quentori Alford has only played in three games thus far this season she is averaging 13.7 points per game as well as pulling down 10.7 rebounds. Danielle Gazaway leads the team in steals (10) and blocks (8).
Ezinne Kalu is leading the Tigers in five categories, in scoring averaging 13.9 points per game, field goal percentage .523, Assists (32), free throw percentage .691 and in steals (32). Teammates Blessing Uba and Erin Hogue assist in other categories. Uba leads the team in block shots (11), and Hogue leads the Tigers in rebounds averaging 7.3 rebounds per contest.
“Like I said before coach (Cedric) Baker has a good team,” stated Freeman-Jackson. “His team is always competitive and they do a good job getting up and down the floor. They are quick and we need to make sure that we can contain them on the offensive side of the floor. We are going to have to really play defense against this team and all the other teams the rest of the year in order to win games.”
