Lady Hornets Dominate Southern

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Danielle Gazaway scored 13 points and added six rebounds to lead Alabama State pasts Southern 52-39 Monday night at the Dunn/Oliver Acadome. Southern came into the contest tied for first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with Mississippi Valley State.

The Lady Hornets (11-12 overall, 8-6 SWAC) opened the game on a 17-4 run before the 11:30 mark in the game and never looked back.

“Southern started playing physical after getting down before the half. We knew they were tied for first place in the conference, so I told my girls don't panic and we will weather the storm,” said ASU head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. “So our girls turned up the tempo as far as the aggression, not letting them knock the ball out of their hands, and I thought our girls did a really good job of paying attention to detail. The two three-pointers from Erica Henderson before the half were huge for us. It really gave us momentum going into the second half. ”

ASU opened the second half on a 13-4 run and led by as much as 22 points 40-18 at the 11:36 mark.

Erica Henderson scored 10 points, including six rebounds while Millicent Jones recorded 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added five rebounds in the contest.

The Lady Jaguars (11-11, 10-5) were led by Jamie Floyd, who scored 13 points, including four rebounds.

“Valley, Southern, Alcorn, and A&M are tough teams to play because they are so physical, but we know we have to come out strong from the start and keep the tempo up throughout the game,” said Freeman-Jackson. “I told my girls before the game that you know we'll have to go through Southern to win the SWAC title, so let's go out and capture a victory tonight.”

Alabama State will travel to Houston, Texas for a matchup against Texas Southern Saturday, February 25. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
