Lady Hornets Seek Revenge Against Grambling

The Alabama State women's basketball team is set to face the Lady Tigers of Grambling State on Thursday, March 1. Tip between the two schools is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The Lady Hornets took Tuesday off after returning from the long Texas swing.  They practiced Wednesday in preparation for the Grambling State game.

“We had a really good practice this morning and then we came back this evening and did a walk through,” Assistant Coach Clayton Harris stated.  “We took it slow and concentrated on running our offense and making sure that we will be able to defend the ball.”

This is a must win game for the Lady Hornets. The last time these two teams met Grambling State defeated Alabama State 62-48 in Grambling, LA.

“We let one slip away from us at their house, but we know we always have to protect home”, said Harris.

The season is two games away from the opening day of the SWAC tournament, which is slated for March 7 in Garland, Texas.  Alabama State enters Thursday's contest with a record of 12-13 overall and 9-7 in the league. Grambling State also comes into the game with a 12-13 overall record and they have a 9-7 mark in the conference.

“If the Lady Hornets can contain Grambling's junior Center, Wymeka Randle and contest Grambling's jump shots the Lady Hornets can win” Harris said. “Nobody is averaging double digits for Grambling. They have about some girls who average 9.6 and 7.6 points per game. We have to play defense and keep them off the boards.”

The contest will be broadcasted live on Hornet Vision and will have live stat coverage as well.  The ASU Sports network has the call of the game.

With the SWAC tournament less than one week away the Lady Hornets will continue en route to the crown of SWAC Champions.

“It's no question that we can win as SWAC Champions,” Harris stated.  “We were the first ones to beat Mississippi Valley and it looks like they (Miss. Valley) is going to win the regular season. We have beaten the best two teams in the league, so if we stay healthy and do the things that we need to do we can win the SWAC tournament.”
