Lady Hornets Tops Arkansas Pine Bluff

Box Score Danielle Gazaway scored 20 points and teammate Taila Arrington added a career high 14 points in leading Alabama State to a 68-57 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff in women's intercollegiate basketball at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff, Ark. Monday night.
 
With the win Alabama State is now 9-11 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while Arkansas Pine Bluff drops to 0-22 and 0-11 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.  Jenise Gentry led the Lady Lions in scoring with 14 points. 
 
In the first half, Alabama State jumped to a 14-9 lead with 11:47 left, the largest lead the Lady Hornets saw in the first half.  Alabama State allowed those points to be chipped away as the Lady Lions tied the game 24-24 with less than four minutes left in the half.  This would be the last tie of the game as the Lady Hornets went on a 6-0 run to end the half with a six point lead (33-27).
 
The Lady Hornets built a 56-38 lead with 8:33 left to go in the game as Lakendra Marsh hit a three point shot.  From this point the Lady Lions went on a 7-0 run in the next three minutes (5:45) narrowing the Lady Hornets lead to 51-58 with 3:15 remaining as Markita Quarles hit two three point field goals in the rally.
 
Alabama State scored the next five points and had a 62-51 lead with 1:34 left.  Taila Arrington hit six free throws to advance the Lady Hornets an 11 point lead with just under a minute left in the game.
 
Pine Bluff scored two more points before the Lady Hornets shot its last free throws of the game to take the 68-57 win.
 
Alabama State finished the game 20-49 from the field for a .408 pct.  Pine Bluff shot 19-58 from the floor for a .328 mark.  ASU out rebounded Arkansas Pine Bluff 48-32, Quentori Alford had 10 boards to lead the Lady Hornets.
 
“What made the difference in the game tonight is that we played defense,” said Head Women's Basketball Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  “Taila Arrington was able to get some vital steals and each time taking it the basketball to score.  The ladies did a great job tonight.  There were some points in the game that it was a nail bitter, but the ladies pulled it thru to get the win.
