Alabama State Look To Keep Momentum Against Southern

Alabama State Lady Hornets (5-11/3-2 SWAC) are looking to build from a 69-67 road win at Alabama A&M when they face Southern University (6-11/5-1 SWAC) Saturday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m.

“This is a huge game for us if we want to win the regular season championship,” said head coach Freda Freedman-Jackson. “With Southern and Alabama A&M both having 1 loss and we have 2 losses we have to win these next 2 home games.”

The game can be watched by free video streaming on bamastatesports.com or you can listen live on the radio on WVAS 90.7, play-by-play live stats are available as well.

Led by SWAC player of the week Lechell Rush, the Jaguars come to Montgomery as the currently hottest team in the conference. They have won three straight games since a 92-76 loss at Grambling on Jan. 6. Rush averaged 17.7 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, during the three-game span.

“Southern has been playing well with a veteran club and has a tradition of winning championships, so defense will be a key for us” Coach Jackson Said, “We have to build on the win over Alabama A&M and let the momentum carry us in to this contest”.

The Lady Hornets had four players in double figures against Alabama A&M, Kierra Paige leading the team with 17 points, Nakiya Smith added 16, Quentori Alford had 12 and Ashley Jones with 10.

Although Paige is averaging 8.1 points per game, Smith still leads the team in scoring 10.8 points per contest and Alford still leads the team in rebounding with 9.3 grabs per game.  She is also second on the team in scoring averaging 10.1 points.

Saturday's game has been deemed as a “White Out” game for the Hornets and all ASU fans are encouraged to wear white. ASU will also honor all “Hometown Heroes”, as all military, policemen and firemen are invited to attend the game. Admittance is free for all “Hometown Heroes” who have their ID or are in uniform.
