Basketball to Host Alcorn For Jr. High/High School Day

The Alabama State women's basketball team is set to host Alcorn State Monday at 3 p.m. for Jr. High/High School Day.  The Lady Hornets and the Lady Braves will tip-off at 3:00 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Alabama State athletics has invited Jr. High/High Schools in and around the Montgomery area to come out and enjoy a day of basketball action.  Admission is free to all students with a school ID.

The game will be broadcast on the airwaves on ASU's Sports Network WVAS (90.7 FM).  The game will be video streamed online at http://bamastatesports.com/showcase/ or www.bamastatesports.com on the basketball game day central.  Livestats will also be available.

The Lady Hornets enters the contest with a 5-12, 3-3 SWAC record after a 57-44 loss to Southern University Saturday in Montgomery.  The Lady Braves will come to the Dome with a 1-15, 1-5 SWAC mark after falling to Alabama A&M  64-44 in Huntsville.

“Alcorn is the type of team that is going to play you tough,” head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said.  “They have always been a hard nose disciplined team that likes to get up and down the court.  We have to stay focused especially after a loss to Southern the other night we didn't stay focused and took too many shots, missing easy lay-ups.  We also didn't do a good job stopping the ball when we needed to.  So we worked on defense as we normally do and we are still trying to make some changes with Taila Arrington being out.  We are just going to have to continue to make adjustments when we see fit and do what we need to do to get the win.”

The Lady Braves are led in scoring by Carolinsa Crumbly with a 12.2 point per game average.  She is also leading the team in steals (48) and also in rebounding (98).  Teammate Tierro Frost leads the team from long range shooting .234 three points per game, she's also heading the team in free throw shooting with .706 average.  As a team Alcorn is only averaging 48.6 points per game.

Alabama State continues to be led in scoring by Nakiya Smith averaging 10.2 points per game.  Quentori Alford leads the team in rebounding 9.5 rebounds per contest.  The Lady Hornets have been averaging 57.9 points from the field.  They lead the conference in rebounding offense (41.4), second in blocked shots (70), and defensive rebounds (25.1).

“This is another key game for us,” said Freeman-Jackson.  “We are rebounding and making key blocks, but we are not defending the ball like we should.  The Southern game was the first conference game that we didn't hit our average in scoring.  We have to continue to play two halves of the game.  We do well scoring in either the first half or the second, but there are times that we just go cold and don't finish with a win like we would like to.”
