Hornets To Host Auburn Montgomery

Hornets get in some practice time preparing for AUM
The Alabama State University men's basketball team will host cross-town neighbor Auburn Montgomery Saturday, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m.

The Hornets (4-5) enter the game looking to break one streak and keep another going. ASU has dropped its last two games and will look to get back on the winning track against the Warhawks who enter the game with a 3-8 record. ASU will also look to remain undefeated at home this season after winning the three home games they have played so far.

"We know what kind of team Coach Chapman will have when they come over here tomorrow," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said. "Coach Chapman has been doing this along time and he will have his team ready, they will be well coached and his teams always play hard so we had better be ready for a battle."

ASU continues to be led in scoring by sophomore Jamel Waters at 15.8 points per game. The Birmingham native is fourth in the SWAC in scoring and leads the league in assists averaging 6.6 per game. He is coming off his first double-double performance of the season when he scored 14 points against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then added a career-high 10 assists.

DeMarcus Robinson will head into the AUM game averaging 12.3 points per outing. His shooting is slowly coming around, but he is one of the top free throw shooters in the conference hitting over 84 percent of his charity tosses.

Sophomore Bobby Brown continues to give the Hornets some punch off the bench. He averages 8.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and continues to be one of the team's top shooters hitting almost 50 percent of his field goals and 41 percent of his three point attempts.

Juniors Luther Page and Maurice Strong are the team's top rebounders. Page averages a team-high 5.2, but Strong is not far behind at 4.9.

The Warhawks will bring a formidable team into the Acadome led by LeShaun Murphy's 14.3 points per game average. Murphy gets plenty of offensive help as AUM averages 73.5 points per game. Brett Person averages 11.7 points and Spencer Jones scores 10.9 point per game.

AUM has hit the boards all season averaging over 34 rebounds per game. Person leads that effort averaging 6.9 boards while teammate Da'Keidres Wade averages five per game.

The Warhawks will provide a challenge for the ASU defense which is coming off a weekend at the Tulane Westin Holiday Classic where they gave up 151 points during their two games. AUM is shooting 45 percent from the field and almost 35 percent from beyond the three point line.

"Anytime you have three players that average in double figures you know that team can score," Jackson said. "We have been on our players about playing hard on defense all the time. You cannot take any possessions off and you really can't take them off against a team like AUM that shoots the ball really well."

"There were times last weekend where our defense was really good, but there were also times where we did not play the way I know we can play. It is good that we have a challenge like what Coach Chapman will bring over to us because it will help get us ready for conference play which begins next week."

These two teams have met 33 times on the hard court with the Hornets holding a 25-7 lead in the series. That includes last season's 73-50 victory.
