LORMAN, Miss. – The Alabama State Women's basketball team outlasted the Alcorn State Lady Braves 60-53 Monday evening at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
“It was a good win for us,” Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “Every time we come to Alcorn, it's always a difficult game for us, because they are a scrappy type of team and I knew they were going to cause us some problems.”
Kierra Paige led the Lady Hornets (8-16 overall, 6-7 SWAC) with 17 points and grabbed four boards, while
Quentori Alford added 14 points and nine rebounds, making 4-of-6 from the field and 6-of-8 from the stripe to round out the ASU's players in double-figures.
“Q came up big for us,
Taila Arrington got to the basket and so did Kierra,” said Freeman-Jackson. “I thought
Erica Henderson did a great job when we needed her to step in. She played great in the 2-3 zone.”
Alabama State had a rough first half, shooting 18.2 percent from the field, but came out in the second half and made 12-of-28, making 42.9 percent of its shots. The Lady Hornets also shot 26-of-34, making 76.5 percent of their shots from the stripe. Alabama State led by as much as nine points at the 17:05 mark in the second half.
“
Brittney Howard is nursing a shoulder injury, but she gave us some quality minutes. Also, tonight is Senior Night for Alcorn, so they are hungry and they made it extra hard for us tonight. She's not able to snatch the ball and it get away from her and that's why those girls take it away from her sometime.”
Howard went 2-for-3 from the field and 2-for-4 from the stripe, collecting six points and four rebounds in 31 minutes. There were six lead changes and two ties during the course of the contest.
“We will enjoy this win tonight, but we'll have to get back to business on Wednesday and get ready for Prairie View,” Freeman-Jackson stated of her team. “We are talking about two teams that are coming to our gym who have beaten us out in Texas, so we have to make sure we beat them at home.”
