Lady Hornets Fall to Prairie View A&M 48-45

Box Score The Alabama State Women's basketball team fell to Prairie View 48-45 Saturday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The Lady Hornets (9-17 overall, 7-8 SWAC) came out at halftime down 29-21, but kept the game close, before tying it up at 42-all at the 4:36 mark. ASU took a 45-42 lead on a Quentori Alford free throw and a jumper with 1:47 remaining in the contest. The Lady Panthers then went on a 6-3 run to finish the game and come up with the victory.

“Well, the first five minutes was crucial for us,” Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “We wanted to be within four or two points from them, and I thought we did that. The thing I'm most disappointed by is when we went up one, we called a timeout, because we knew they were going for the lob, Q supposed to have stepped back and Erica let the girl beat her, now they go ahead one.”

ASU shot 31.7 percent from the field, 63 percent from the free throw line, and 22.2 percent from behind the arch.

“We are just going to have to bounce back, because this is what has been plaguing us all year long, not finishing games.”

Prairie View (10-13, 7-6) had 14 points off turnovers in the contest, shooting 37.2 percent from the field and 50 percent behind the arch.

“We were missing easy lay-ups,” Freeman-Jackson said. “When you miss easy lay-ups, in return, you get run outs, which will eventually cost you points.”

Sophomore guard Kierra Paige who went 3-for-6 from the field, 1-for-2 behind the arch, and 6-for-8 at the stripe to lead Alabama State with 13 points. Sophomore guard Danielle Gazaway was the only other Lady Hornet to score in double-figures with 10 points.

“Q was struggling so I went with Ashley,” Freeman-Jackson stated. “I thought she did a great job getting us a basket here or there. Q, she always play pretty decent defense, but that last possession, I don't know what happened.”

Larissa Scott led PVA&M with 17 points, while Kiara Williams added a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds on the night.

“Texas Southern has girls that can really put the ball in the basket,” said Freeman-Jackson. “They beat us pretty badly down there, so we're going to do the things that we know how to do and see what happens.”

Alabama State will host Texas Southern for Senior Day on Monday, February 25 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
