Brittney Wright's 21 points and seven rebounds led the Alabama State women's basketball team to a 70-61 victory over the University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff Lady Lions on Monday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
"This is a win that we definitely needed to come up with," stated Freda Freedman-Jackson, "I thought the girls put forth an excellent effort and they created extra possessions. We had 23 offensive rebounds and that tells you we're working and hustling we are trying to get back to playing Hornet basket."
The Lady Hornets (8-7 overall/1-3 SWAC) endured back and forth battles the first half of the game with several lead changes, both teams went into the locker room tied at 32. The Lady Hornets who have been struggling from the floor the past few games shot only 12-38 and shot 62 percent from the line. Wright led the Hornets in the half with seven points with five rebounds while
Ashunte Smith added six points.
"Brittney had a superb game after our last loss she was really upset because she knew she played hard and did what she could do," Freedman-Jackson said. We as coaches felt like our upperclassmen weren't stepping up so we decided to go a different direction. Wright came in and put forth that extra effort that we are looking for so we were very pleased at that."
Alabama State finished the game shooting 68 percent from the free-throw line going 24-for-64 from the field, shooting 37.5 percent on the evening. Talia Arrington had 11 points, whileÂ

The Lady Hornets will host Alabama A&M Saturday, January 18 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on the campus of ASU. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
