Hornets Face Southern with First Place on the Line

Hornets get a practice in at Southern preparing for Monday's game with the Jaguars.
It's one vs. two when Alabama State plays at Southern Monday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.  The Jaguars are 10-10 overall but enter tomorrow's contest 6-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), a half a game in front of the Hornets (11-6/5-1 SWAC).

"Anytime you hit the road you want to get that first one and we always play to win two," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We were fortunate enough to get the first one (Alcorn State) Saturday night."

"We have to get ready for Southern and they are a half a game up on us with each of us having one loss.  We have to come in and do the things we do best to give us an opportunity to beat Southern Monday night."

Points may be at a premium as the game features the top two scoring defenses in the conference.  Southern leads the league only giving up 63.6 points per game, and the Hornets are not far behind in second allowing their opponents only 66.9 points per outing.

Southern will enter the game averaging 67.7 points per game, but has three players that are averaging in double-digits to lead the Jaguars.  Calvin Godfrey is one of the top big men in the league averaging 13 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while leading the conference in field goal percentage shooting .576 from the field.

Malcolm Miller averages 10.2 points per game and the third double digit scorer is Tre Lynch, averaging 10.

The Hornets will enter the contest with three double-digit scorers as well as they are third in the SWAC in scoring averaging 71.9 points per game.

Jamel Waters leads the team averaging 14.1 points per game while DeMarcus Robinson, who suffered a broken nose in practice and is playing his second game with a face mask, is still averaging 12.7 points per game.

Bobby Brown continues to be a super sub and averages 11 points per game while also shooting 50 percent from the field and averaging over five rebounds per game.

Maurice Strong leads the team averaging 6.4 rebounds per game and Jamel Waters has 109 assists on the season which not only leads ASU but the SWAC as well.

The contest will be broadcast on WVAS 90.7 FM.  Fans can also follow live stats or @ bamastatesports.com on twitter, Facebook and Instagram for in-game updates throughout the contest.
