Cold Second Half Dooms ASU at Evansville

Maurice Strong had 10 points and seven rebounds against the Purple Aces
Box Score
Jamel Waters and Luther Page scored 13 points each, but it was not enough as a cold second half of shooting the basketball cost Alabama State in an 81-63 loss at Evansville.

ASU (3-5) came out in the second half and built on its two point halftime lead by scoring the second half's first six points building a 57-49 lead with 15 minutes left in the game.  It was at that time the Hornets suddenly went cold against Evansville's zone defense and had trouble scoring over the final 15 minutes as they finished the second half only shooting 20 percent from the field.

"We haven't worked a lot against a zone, but we have several zone offensive sets that we run and that we ran today," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "I think our inability to make shots hurt us bad.  We actually got the ball where we wanted against their zone.  We got the ball to Wendell, Maurice and Luther around the basket and we just didn't make shots.  We also had a couple of good looks from the perimeter and the shots didn't fall and they got going there a little bit."

"Again, it was a good ball game but our inability to make shots and get stops on defense really hurt us."

As cold as ASU was in the second half a jump shot from DeMarcus Robinson had the Hornets only trailing 69-62 with six minutes left in the game, but Evansville (9-2) outscored the Hornets 12-1 over the final six minutes to push the lead out to the final score.

"They made a run there and caught back up and we got in a hurry," Jackson said.  "Instead of taking our time and being patient we got in a hurry and again, once we had shots we didn't make them and that continued to help momentum go their way."

Maurice Strong and Robinson finished the game in double digits with 10 points each while Strong and Page led ASU's rebounding efforts with seven each.

The Purple Aces top two scorers again led the home team as Egidiju Mockevicius had a game-high 25 points and completed his double-double with 12 rebounds, and D.J. Balentine had 20 points.

The Hornets took a slim 49-47 lead into halftime after outscoring the hosts 18-9 over the final four minutes of the first half.  Page led the first half comeback with 10 points off the bench.  Waters had nine while Strong and Robinson added eight points each.

Balentine and Mockevicius combined to score 25 of the Purple Aces 47 points with Balentine's 14 leading the way.

The Hornets will take some time off for the Christmas Holidays.  They will be back in action December 30 when they play host to Fort Valley State at 7 p.m.
