Nakiya Smith scored 13 points of her sixteen in the second half to lead the Lady Hornets to 69-51 in their first SWAC road victory at the H.O. Clemmons Arena, Monday.

With 5:34 left in the second half Alabama State led by as many as 25 points. The Lady Lions went on a 6-2 run in less than a minute to chip the Lady Hornets lead to 16.  The points went back in forth for the last two minutes of the game before Alabama State's Jamicia Lewis scored the last basketball to give the ladies the win.

"I am very proud of how the girls performed tonight," said
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We played on both ends of the court and I am very pleased with that. We just need to carry this momentum into our next contest."

UAPB stayed in the game with strong defense, registering 10 points off of Alabama State's turnovers, but shot .273 from the floor in the loss. Alabama State goes to 38-7 all-time against the Lady Lions, who had one player in double-figures. Christina Lasane had 17 points to lead all players and six boards for UAPB, while Cassidy Wright had eight points.  Â

Alabama State had 45 off the bench points, 12 which came from freshmen
Kayla Tucker and five more from
Antoinette Brown in her five minutes of action. The Lady Hornets had 28 points in the paint five which were from senior
Quentori Alford. Alford also had eight boards to lead Alabama State. Smith had a tremendous second frame, scoring 13 points to lead the Lady Hornets. She's scored in double-figures in five of her last seven outings, averaging 11.0 ppg in SWAC play.

Alford accomplished a significant individual milestone in recording her 50
th block on the season one from her career high of 51. She now has a total of 165 career blocks, moving her to second in all time blocks behind former Lady Hornet Shanice Merritt who has 171 career blocks.

Alabama State took advantage of UAPB from deep, hitting 7-22 from behind the arc, including a 4-8 mark from Tucker.Â
Ashunte Smith had three of her own scoring 13 points had the third and final Lady Hornet in double figures.

"I really think we did well in the shooting aspect tonight," Freeman-Jackson stated. "We stayed focused accomplished our goal something we haven't been doing a lot of lately."

The Lady Hornets will continue on the road as they face Alabama A&M Saturday at 4 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
