Lady Hornets Fall Short In Overtime

Box Score The Alabama State women's basketball team suffered an overtime 83-74 loss to Texas Southern Monday night in a game that was closer than the score indicated.
 
Nakiya Smith of the Lady Hornets led all scorers with a season and game high 29 points and three rebounds. Brittney Wright led the team with ten rebounds, along with 15 points achieving a double-double.  TSU had four double digit scorers, as the duo of Jazzmin Parker and Alexus Johnson led all with 18 a piece.
 
"I was proud of tonight's performance" head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. Texas Southern has a great ball club, they did a great job executing on offense which overall affected the outcome of the game at the end."
 
"Brittney Wright had great game for us tonight being an undersized big she had to work twice as hard for her double-double as for Nakiya, she has not played for us in five games, so for her to come back and have 29 points I am really impressed with that."
 
The Lady Hornets went 29 for 82 (35.4%) from the field for the entire game as their opponent TSU shot slightly better going 27-55 (49.1%).   
 
 ASU got out to an early 21-18 lead in the first ten minutes of play behind the three point shooting of Ashunte Smith, TSU would then fight back and tie the score 26-26 at the 7:39 mark. Both teams would then battle back trading baskets as each would score 15 points  a piece to head into halftime with a 41-41 tie.  
 
At the half A.Smith, Wright and N. Smith would lead the Lady Hornets with eight points each; Wright also tallied a team high four rebounds heading into the locker room. TSU's Brianna Sidney would lead all scorers at the half with ten.   
 
After the team's traded baskets to open the second half, Texas Southern went on a 6-0 run to take the lead 49-43 at the 15:58 mark on a lay-up by Sarah Williams. It remained a close game for most of the next four minutes.  ASU would then go on a 5-0 run pulling within a single point at the 9:58 mark behind a N. Smith three pointer cutting the score to 54-53 in favor of TSU. However, the Lady Hornets would not quit as they would tie the score on several different occasions with fewer than seven minutes to play in the game. In the final minute , with the Hornets down by one 71-70 TSU's  Miracle Davis would miss a key free throw as ASU's  N.Smith would send the game into overtime after a big lay-up with 0.03 left in the second half.
 
 In Overtime after both teams traded baskets, TSU would out distance themselves from the Lady Hornets as they would score nine more points to take the 83-74 victory.
