Lady Hornets Basketball Head to Mississippi for First WNIT

The Alabama State women's basketball team travels to face Southern Mississippi, in the first round of the 2015 Preseason WNIT (Women's National Invitational Tournament). The game will be held at the Reed Greed Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Miss., November 13, the tip-off is set for 11 a.m.

"This is going to be a great experience for us to kick off our season playing in this tournament," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.

This is the Lady Hornets' first ever appearance in the WNIT.

"I think it's a great honor for us (ASU) to play in the Preseason WNIT. We have the opportunity to play Southern Miss., who was invited to the 2014-15 post season WNIT. So this is a team accustomed to playing on a National stage" said Freeman-Jackson.

Round One of the tournament opens Nov. 13. Round Two will be played Nov. 15-17. The semifinals matches will be played Nov. 19. With the championship game, being nationally televised on CBS Sports Network; set for Sunday, Nov. 22.

Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on Nov. 20-21.

The WNITfield consists of: Alabama State (SWAC); Baylor (Big 12); Chattanooga (Southern); Dartmouth (Ivy); DePaul (Big East); Drexel (Colonial); Indiana (Big Ten); Jacksonville (Atlantic Sun); McNeese State (Southland); Siena (Metro Atlantic); South Florida (American); Southern Illinois (MVC); Southern Miss (Conference USA); St. Bonaventure (Atlantic 10); Tennessee State (Ohio Valley); and UT Arlington (Sun Belt).

"I feel that we will be ready. We have our work cut out for us but, with the girls that we have returning, we should know what to expect because we had an opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament," said Freeman-Jackson.

"Ending our last season on the national stage and starting the season on the national stage is great for my program and ASU".
