Alabama State traveled to faced Tennessee State in the consolation bracket of the 2015 Preseason WNIT.
After falling to Southern Miss. in the first round of the WNIT, the Lady Hornets have a chance at redemption, as they face Tennessee State Lady Tigers.
"This game is going to be a good match for us. It will help us prepare for the teams we have to face during the South Western Athletic Conference (SWAC) games," Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said.
Freeman-Jackson is familiar with Tennessee State. As a head coach, Freeman-Jackson has a 2-1 overall record against TSU. She first faced them as a head coach during the 1999-2000 season where her team fell to the Lady Tigers by a slight margin of 67-64 during the UAB tournament.
"Tennessee State is pretty skilled. They (Tennessee State) has a big point guard which may cause us a problem, because our point guards are small and we are going to have to defend theirs," Freeman-Jackson said. "That's one of the match-ups that I'm really concerned with, their point guards being 5'8 and 5'7 compared to our point guards being 5'6 & 5'2, if that. So that is going to be one of the biggest problems we will have. Other than that we match-up pretty well with Tennessee State, they won their conference last year (Ohio Valley)."
ASU has the difficult task of thwarting TSU's Senior Point Guard Brianna Lawrence.
"She (Brianna) is putting up big time numbers, she scored 6 3-pointers. She is their go-to scorer and puts up a lot of shots so we are going to make sure we guard her," Freeman-Jackson explained. "One of the tactics that we are trying to use is the same tactic we used against Prairie View last season. We have to locate where she is at all times, maybe trap her a few times and try to keep the ball out her hands. If not she can cause us major problems."
The Lady Hornets have shown that their tenacious defense can match-up with any team, also long as they can maintain their effort the entire game.
"We need to make sure we play two great halves. We did a good job defensively against Southern Miss., only allowing them 22 points in the first two quarter, however they (Southern Miss.) scored 43 in the second half. So we didn't do a great job finishing the game," Freeman-Jackson said. "We have to make sure we don't run out of steam. I think we played extremely hard and gave it our all in the first half but didn't have enough energy to finish out the game."
The game will be held at the SIU Arena in Carbondale, Ill. Friday, November 20; tip-off is set for 4 p.m. CT.
