MONTGOMERY – Alabama State kicked off the 2015-16 season with a 93-58 exhibition win over neighbor Huntingdon College.

The Hornets had five players reach double digits lead by Steve Rogers 18 points.  Jamel Waters added 17 while Thomas Torloft and Terrance LeFlore added 14.  Chidozie Omile scored 12.

The Hornets were able to break open a close game at half by shooting 52 percent from the field in the second half outscoring the Hawks 50-24.

For the game ASU shot 44 percent and a blistering 56 percent on their three point attempts.  ASU also did a lot of damage at the free throw line hitting 26 of their 33 attempts.

ASU struggled rebounding the basketball as both teams finished with 47 rebounds.  Bobby Brown and Waters led ASU's efforts on the boards with seven each.  Waters also had a game-high eight assists and three steals.

"I didn't think we did a good job of defending them early in the game," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We seemed like we were to anxious to get to the other end and we were forcing shots and taking bad shots."

Raheem Berry led the Hawks with 16 points, but only two in the second half as the Hornets were able to shut him down in the second half.

Huntingdon only shot 29 percent from the field and 19 percent from beyond the three point line.  They also struggled from the free throw line only hitting half of their 26 attempts, but it was the rebounding that really stood out a lot to Jackson.

"We certainly have to get back to boxing out and do it every day and spend a lot of time on it," Jackson said.  "Other teams may have an advantage being we are going to try and play small ball.  Our bigs have to play better.  If we can do a good job with our big guys we will have a better chance."

ASU held at 43-34 halftime lead thanks to their ability to get to the free throw line.  The Hornets hit 13 of their 19 free throw attempts while Huntingdon only hit five of eight.  That eight points turned out to be the difference as both teams struggled from the field.

Berry led all scorers with 12 points for the Hawks while Torloft and Omile each had nine points for ASU.  Huntingdon our rebounded ASU 30-23 with 12 of those offensive rebounds that led to 11 second chance points.

The Hornets will start the regular season Saturday Nov. 14 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech.  The game will tip off at 6 p.m. and is scheduled to be shown live on ESPN3.
